What To Wear For Engagement Photos | Expert Advice – Featuring, Styled by Becca

We all have that moment where you stand in your closet, staring into the abyss of clothes and feel like you have nothing to wear! Or, feel like you have the fashion sense of a middle schooler (or is that just me?).

With spring coming up, engagement sessions are a huge hit! As a photographer, I could give you oodles (is that a word?) of advice on lighting, locations, posing, etc. But when it comes to wardrobe, I am calling in the experts. Let me introduce you to this amazing stylist, Rebecca. She is going to share some of her fashion tips to help you pick out the perfect engagement session outfit.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do:

Hey y’all! I’m a wardrobe stylist located in Georgia. I live in Savannah but travel frequently for fun and for my clients. I’ve worked on shoots in Las Vegas, Georgia, Los Angeles, and DC (coming up in March). As a wardrobe stylist, I help my clients feel and look their best whether it’s for a photoshoot, event, or a simple wardrobe revamp. Currently I am finishing up my undergraduate degree at Georgia Southern where I am majoring in Fashion Merchandising and minoring in Business. On the weekends you can find me watching Netflix, taking photos for my blog, and working with clients.

How/Why/When did you get started with your business?

In 2014, I began my freshman year at Georgia Southern University (hail southern) where I majored in Fashion Merchandising. In the next year, I began my fashion blog in November of 2015. From there, I knew that anything fashion related was something I wanted to do as a career. In 2016, I became more serious about my blog and styled my first photoshoot with a “Back to School” theme. Here, I partnered with two boutiques in Valdosta, GA to advertise their clothing. Since then, I’ve styled shoots and clients all over the United States with various designers, boutiques, photographers, and other wedding vendors. I started Styled by Becca in 2015 to help women and men understand their fashion style and how to use that style to look and feel their best all within their budget.

Before every engagement session, the bride will always ask me ” what should I wear?” Any tips & advice?

Keep it simple, yet stylish. Start with one pattern or outfit as inspiration and build around that to dress you and your significant other. For example, if you found a dress or top that you absolutely love, than use that piece as inspiration for the rest of the wardrobe. Once you have your first pattern or outfit chosen, choose 2 other colors to work with and begin choosing your outfits. Keeping the above rules in mind, make sure to have fun with this. This is the happiest time in your life and these photos will be used for various wedding activities and more importantly kept forever for your children and grandchildren to see.

Any things avoid?

Avoid using too many patterns or colors that are too matchy. You want to the colors and pattern to complement each other. Choose one pattern and a complementing color to use as your color scheme.

What are your favorite trends coming up for spring?

Honestly, I’m super excited about this season’s trends. The infamous floral print gets a new look with more feminine silhouettes. We can expect to see it on longer dresses, skirts, and jumpsuits. Along with floral print, ruffles are making a major statement this season. A ruffled top paired with white jeans is the perfect way style a bride for her engagement session. However, my all time favorite trend for spring is the fact that patches (usually for covering holes on clothing) are being used to make a seriously stylish statement and super easy to diy on your favorite pair of jeans.

As for wedding dress trends, 2 piece dresses and off the shoulder dresses are making a huge statement this year. Both styles are super fun and playful for any super, chic bride.

Now, you also do bridal styling! Tell us more! What does that include?

Of course! Bridal styling is a super fun service I offer. It’s for the brides who know what they want in their head, but have a hard time actually finding that “say yes to the dress” gown. After a consultation, where we speak on your style and budget, I’ll work on styling outfits for engagement photos, bridal showers, honeymoon, and of course the entire wedding party, which can be the toughest part of wedding planning.

Lastly, tell us 3 fun things we would never know about you!

1. When I first began college I was a pre-med major. After seeing the course list, I quickly changed to something with less science and math classes and of course something I was actually passionate about.

2. I’m one of those people guilty of walking into Target for one item and leaving with a buggy full. Ooops.

3. I am a HUGE Disney fan. I went to Disneyworld and Disneyland 3 times last year. Styling a Disney photoshoot is a major dream of mine.

Huge thanks to Rebecca for letting me interview her and get some great fashion tips for my newly engaged friends! Be sure to follow her on social media and contact her for any fashion advice!
